The Role of Exercise in Immune Function

Considering the current situation worldwide and the growing emergence of CoVid-19, it is more important than ever to take measures to keep ourselves safe and healthy. Although we may be required to stay home, there are still plenty of ways to keep our immune system healthy and active. Our immune system is our body’s natural protective agent. One of the most potent immune-boosters is exercise. Exercise naturally dilates the blood vessels in our body, allowing better circulation of the white blood cells that are central to our immune function. Moderate exercise also produces anti-inflammatory effects throughout the body, which can be an important factor in reducing chronic disease. Regular physical activity can lower the rates of infection and other types of viral and bacterial diseases. It has also been associated with lower incidence rates of influenza and pneumonia. The benefits are endless. During this time, it is so important to keep moving. Something as simple as getting outside for a walk or run can be a huge stimulus. At home workouts can be as simple or as creative as you want them to be. If you don’t have weights, perform bodyweight exercises for higher reps. You can also use household items such as bookbags, milk jugs, suitcases, or anything else you have laying around as weights. Attached is an example of a simple workout that can be performed at home with minimal or no equipment. Exercise is medicine; rest is rust! Let’s keep moving!
